Steal her Look: Jourdan Dunn

A low key take on an evening look seen on Jourdan in Numero magazine. It’s all about the lips so keep the rest of the face simple.  Use Mac Strobe Cream to highlight and add contour to the face. We love using Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on our eyes to get that dewy look.

Stick on some false lashes if yours are a bit sparse or use a good mascara – we like any from Lancome. Fill in your brows for extra definition.

Line your lips with a pencil for staying power. It’s important to find the right shade of red lipstick for you, what works on your friend/sister might not be for you. For extra shine, finish off with Mac Lipglass.

Nicole Richie's Budget Beauty Buy

How does 72 pence for a cleanser sound? Nicole Richie was in this week's NOW Magazine saying "I use Dove soap to wash my face. I know it sounds weird but I swear by it."

Nicole Richie

Dove Original Beauty Cream Bar is the original and classic bar and as with all products in the Dove range, contains ¼ moisturising cream and is pH neutral so causes minimal disturbance to the skin’s natural moisture balance.

You can get two bars of Dove for £1.44 in Boots. If it works for Nicole...

How to Give Yourself a Face Lift

No scalpel or botox required! Last week we told you about superb facialist Antonia Burrell. We asked her how we could save some pennies and give ourselves a facial at home.

Read her at home daily face lift tips:

1. Using your ring and middle fingers, start from the centre of the chin and working outwards and upwards onto the cheeks massage using small, circular movements.

2. Working inwards against the lines and wrinkles, massage around the eyes, focusing on the socket. Do this 12 times.

3. Massage the forehead using your middle fingers with small circular movements. Work up towards the hairline.

4. To finish, use light tapping movements all over the face with your middle and ring finger. Feel the tension melt away. Spend a minute on each step, and then wipe away cleanser with a wash cloth or muslin.

It’s even better if you can get a friend to do it for you!

Spotlight On: Antonia Burrell

Anonia Burrell is an experienced Facialist with over 18 years experience. She is an accredited member of BABTAC (British Association for Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology) and has been an Associate Lecturer at The London College of Fashion for the last seven years. More recently she has been teaching postgraduates The Natural Face Lift Facial, which incorporates an advanced massage technique designed by Burrell and accredited by BABTAC.

After working at numerous luxury salons and spas, Antonia launched her own holistic skincare collection to reflect her expertise and passion in helping troublesome skin suffers achieve radiant, flawless skin through 100% natural, potent plant-based remedies that really work and help to harmonise body and mind.

Antonia’s products have featured in Tatler, Grazia, Woman and Home and Telegraph Magazine and were Editor’s Pick in the Natural Beauty Yearbook 2011.

We put some of your questions to her:

How can I deal with combination skin?
Generally a combination skin is an oilier t-zone in comparison to the rest of the face. When cleansing ensure that you focus on these areas as they tend to get clogged up quicker because there are more sweat and sebaceous glands present. Use light moisturisers and if needed just add more moisturiser to the cheek areas which tend to be slightly drier.

Products recommended:  Natural Glow Cleansing Oil, Forest Dew Skin Tonic, Pure Therapy Facial Serum and Cream Supreme

How can I deal with dark patches?
You need regular exfoliation and good quality skincare products that address hyper-pigmentation. Use as natural a product as possible. Microdermabrasion as a professional treatment can help with dark patches too. If the dark patches are occurring as a result of blemishes, it is advisable to treat the blemishes first and get them under control before dealing with the post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Products recommended:   Natural Glow Cleansing Oil, Forest Dew Skin Tonic, Radiant Light Facial Serum and Cream Supreme

How can I manage oily skin?
Let me just say that an oily skin type is the best skin type to have; managing it is where you get the best of both worlds.

My first tip: do not over cleanse and ensure you are using the right type of cleanser for your skin. One way to work out if your cleanser agrees with your skin is whether your skin feels dry after cleansing. If it does, it is being stripped of its natural oils which will cause your sebaceous glands to go into overdrive to replace the loss. Do not over cleanse your skin! Secondly, try to avoid using products that contain mineral oil or liquid paraffin as these ingredients block the pores.

Products recommended:   Natural Glow Cleansing Oil, Forest Dew Skin Tonic, Pure Therapy Facial Serum and Cream Supreme

How can I prevent breakouts, particularly in the chin area?
Sudden breakouts in the chin area are typically caused by a hormonal imbalance. This is because hormones play a role in the skin's production of oil. When the hormones produce excess oil, breakouts can develop. Things like the monthly cycle, contraception and pregnancy can all disrupt the delicate balance of hormones.

When a woman's progesterone levels increase, the oil glands are over stimulated causing them to produce excess oil. This is turn can lead to breakouts. Unfortunately for women hormonal break outs can be quite obvious because they frequently appear as papules on the skins surface. Papules are solid raised pimples which do not contain pus; therefore no amount of squeezing will reduce them.

The good news, however is that hormonal breakouts are not usually manifest across the whole face. Hormonal breakouts typically only occur on the lower half of the face especially around the chin, mouth and jaw line. During the first few months of pregnancy progesterone levels also increase causing many 'mums to be' to suffer from breakouts. The good news is that this tends to subside after the first trimester.

Hormonal acne affects women of all ages. During a woman's normal cycle progesterone levels increase after ovulation which is why many women get break outs the week or so before their period. So it’s a good idea to monitor your cycle so that you are aware when you are ovulating and use clay based, deep cleansing masks to help to control the excess oil being produced.

You may want to think about doing an extra cleanse at this time too. Generally though, try to avoid using products that contain mineral oil or liquid paraffin, opt for high quality natural products. 100% natural where possible!

Products recommended:   Natural Glow Cleansing Oil, Forest Dew Skin Tonic, Pure Therapy Facial Serum and Cream Supreme

What products can even out my skin tone (without resorting to bleaching products)?
Antonia Burrell Radiant Light Facial Serum - a specialist product for pigmentation and uneven skintone, uses Frankincense, Sea Buckthorn Extract, Galbanum, Carrot Seed and Myrrh.

Antonia Burrell Natural Glow Cleansing Oil – contains Castor Seed, Lemon, Bitter Orange, Tea Tree and Tuscan Cypress to deeply purify and even out skin tone to leave your skin with a 'natural glow'.

Antonia Burrell Cream Supreme Moistuiser helps to reduce breakouts, pigmentation and even out skin tone while repsecting the skins natural integrity.

Antonia will be Guest Facialist at Urban Retreat, Harrods from July 11 – 22 where a 60 minute facial costs £95 or 120 mins (which sounds like heaven) is £120. We heartily recommend!

Holiday Hair Healers

PhytoSpecific are leaders in hair and skin care specifically formulated for black and mixed race women. The collection of shampoos, conditioners and treatments are infused with botanical extracts and natural oils to help balance levels of protein and moisture leaving hair smooth, shiny and resilient.

Our tester tried the Deep Restructuring Shampoo and Balm on return from holiday:

Hair Type - Natural mixed race hair (Afro and Indian)

To say my hair was fried was putting it lightly! I'd had a lovely week in the sun and had washed my hair with the free shampoo at the hotel (always a mistake), put in some Aveda Be Curly curl enhancer (very good by the way) and left my hair like that for a week. The sun shone, the rain fell and the wind blew on my tired locks but I didn't care as I was on holiday and therefore not worrying about my hair.

Touching down in London, I knew I'd have to do something about the matting curls on my head and was wondering which intensive treatment would be able to sort my mop top out. I opted for Phyto Specifc Deep Restructuring Shampoo and Deep Restructuring Balm.

I followed the instructions to the letter:

Deep Restructuring Shampoo
apply on wet hair, massage gently
rinse and leave to foam for a few minutes
rinse thoroughly

Deep Restructuring Balm
spread liberally throughout hair using a wide tooth comb
leave for 15 minutes or more depending on porosity of hair (I left it for an hour underneath a shower cap. Attractive!)
rinse thoroughly

My hair was amazingly soft, sweet smelling and all around lovely. The wide tooth comb simply glided through my hair and it felt clean and in very good condition. I heartily recommend it if you've been a little unkind to your hair and award it 5 out of 5. It does exactly what it says on the tin!

PhytoSpecifc Deep Restructuring Shampoo - £11.50
PhytoSpecifc Deep Restructuring Balm - £19.50

Tried and Tested: Wen® by Chaz Dean Hair Treatment

Wen® is a range of hair products from Hollywood hairdresser Chaz Dean (he’s worked on stars at the Oscars and MTV Music Awards) that are free of SLS and nasty chemicals.

We tried the Re-Moist Intensive Hair Treatment which was designed for use before and after any chemical treatments (i.e. relaxers) to add moisture, body and shine and to restore your hair and give it a bit of strength.

They are so sure you will be pleased with the results they offer a 60 day money back guarantee – even if the containers are empty!

Our tester is mixed race with dry, unruly and thick relaxed hair (her words not ours!). Here is what she had to say:

Feel: The product feels substantial and has the qualities you'd expect of an intensive hair treatment; heavy, creamy and rich.

Smell: A sweet coconut aroma which is relaxing and smells 'clean' without the greasy oiliness that coconut products often have.

Texture: A thick, rich, soothing texture which immediately made me feel like I was using something substantial on my thick, dry hair.

The conditioning treatment was very easy to use with a simple application after shampoo, on wet hair. The hair treatment definitely helped smooth my hair whilst blow drying, which makes me believe it worked in nourishing my hair. The scent was sweet and the texture of the product was very relaxing and felt nourishing.

The only thing I would change about it is perhaps the packaging as it wasn't entirely aesthetically pleasing and probably isn't something that I'd take off the shelf in a shop. Aside from that, I would give it 4 out of 5 and don't doubt that continued use would be beneficial in soothing dry, coarse hair like mine!

Tomorrow is T-Day!

Boots have declared tomorrow T-Day and are holding a tights amnesty. Pop into the branch on London Oxford St, Birmingham High Street or on Manchester Market on 27th and 28th May, ditch your old tights in the special T-Day bins and receive a free sample of Nivea Express Hydration (while stocks last).

Boots surveyed over 1,000 women to find out the temperature at which they ditch the tights and go bare legged and the majority answered 22oC. Looking out of the window now, it may be hard to believe but tomorrow is forecast to be that hot so is the prefect chance to banish the tights and use the free cream to get your legs summer ready.

Boots suggest we follow these steps for perfect pins:

1.De-fuzz
We recently tried Nair Silky Sensations Hair Removal Cream and were pleasantly surprised with the results. Didn’t have the horrible industrial smell it used to and we were still hair free 7 days later.
