How to be a Fashion Forward Savvy Sale Shopper

Put it down! Yes you with that fluorescent green lycra jumpsuit. It doesn’t matter that it’s been reduced from £100 to £3.99 or that it has a designer label. You’ll never wear it!

Sound familiar? We’ve all been there – standing in the shop, giddy with excitement at the reduction, not giving much thought to where and when we’ll really wear that piece of clothing. And where is it now? Languishing at the back of the wardrobe/drawer or in the charity shop window.

This year, let’s promise ourselves we’ll do better. There are tried and tested methods to getting the best out of the sales.

Buy the best you can afford
Instead of buying 4 jumpers from the high street reduced to £15, think about buying one (in classic never goes out of fashion black, cream, navy) designer version in wool, cashmere or a silk cotton blend. Long term it will probably outlive the high street versions, which generally don’t take well to repeated washings. Try and apply that principle to everything you buy. It might mean you end up with less bags but what you do have will last.

Invest in a really good pair of jeans (or two)
Designer jeans tend to have really good reductions. We’ve found pairs with up to 75% off in the past. As jeans are items we tend to wear and wear and keep for quite a while, consider them a good investment.

Think about your wardrobe for next season
Hot trends for Spring/Summer are mid calf length skirts, anything with animal print, the colours tangerine, coral, fuschia and white (teamed with neutral accessories) and pyjama pant style trousers. The 70s are also in so think about jumpsuits, flares etc.

Invest in winter woolens
In this country you can never have too many jumpers and cardigans (just look out the window!) Again, go for the best quality you can afford so they’ll see through next winter and beyond.

If you love it, get it now
Shopping at the start of the sales can mean the reductions aren’t as good but the best stuff often tends to go early. Too much umming and ahhing might mean when you go back, some other savvy shopper beat you to it.

And last but not least, don’t buy something just because it’s cheap. If you wouldn’t buy it full price, don’t buy it at all – it’s a waste of money and you’ll probably never wear it!

Happy shopping!
