When it all gets too much, we recommend the award-winning (Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Spa Award 2010 –among others) Ragdale Hall Health Hydro and Thermal Spa. Only 90 mins from St Pancras, London (trains from £14) even the taxi driver who took us from the station (£15) sang the spa’s praises. Oh do we agree – the place is fabulous!

No need is left untended, no dietary requirement inconvenient (between us we had no wheat, no dairy and no sugar) and the staff couldn’t be more friendly and attentive. Did we mention the bathroom toiletries are from The White Company and Clarins!
We went on an Overnight Reviver Break (from £190 pp) which included a 50 minute massage - so good we fell asleep - breakfast in bed, a 3 course buffet lunch and a 3 course dinner, all of which was delicious and refreshingly had wheat, dairy and nut free options.
Guests take relaxing very seriously and the majority of people wander about in their robes and slippers. There’s even a room dedicated to daytime snoozing!

The highlight of our visit was the thermal spa; ten different heat/water treatment rooms all devoted to your total relaxation – our favourite was the Rose Sauna – it felt like we were lying on a beach in the Caribbean.
