Buxom Bombshell Jane Russell Dies at 89

CNN reports the 1940s and '50s movie bombshell, whose name was synonymous with voluptuousness, died Monday morning at her home in Santa Maria, California, her family said. Jane Russell was 89.

Daughter-in-law Etta Waterfield said that Russell was a "pillar of health" but caught a bad cold and died of respiratory difficulties.

Russell's children, Thomas K. Waterfield, Tracy Foundas and Robert "Buck" Waterfield," were at her side, Etta Waterfield said.

Eccentric philanthropist and movie producer Howard Hughes was the first to put Jane Russell on the silver screen, signing her to a seven-year contract in 1940 and promptly putting her in his production of "The Outlaw," a film about a torrid romance between Billy the Kid and woman named Rio (Russell).

The film got only limited release -- in 1943 -- because censors at the time were skittish about the attention given Russell's figure. Hughes wasn't satisfied. He pulled the film from release and kept it out of circulation for six more years while he did more reshoots and re-editing.
And, Hughes kept Russell off the screen -- her only other appearance during those seven years was in "The Young Widow" (1946), shot while she was on loan to United Artists.

Hughes' extensive publicity campaign for "The Outlaw," however -- she has said that he had her making appearances five days a week for five years -- made Russell popular during World War II as a pin-up, and when the movie was finally released in 1946, she was a star.

While Hughes fetishized Russell's body in other films after her initial contract ended and the two negotiated another, the actress quietly made a name for herself as a talented actress capable of high drama or light comedy. She appeared as Calamity Jane with Bob Hope in "The Paleface" (1948) -- another loan-out -- and a sequel, "Son of Paleface," in 1952 -- earning an Oscar nomination for the song "Am I in Love?"

Robert Mitchum was her co-star twice -- in 1951's "His Kind of Woman" and 1952's "Macao." She shared the screen with Frank Sinatra and Groucho Marx in 1951's "Double Dynamite," and with Victor Mature, Vincent Price and Hoagy Carmichael in "The Las Vegas Story" (1952).

But it was 1953's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" with Marilyn Monroe that shot Russell into the stratosphere. She was hailed for her singing and comedic acting, and just two years later made her last film for Hughes.

Russell had some success as a singer in the 1940s, appearing with the Kay Kayser Orchestra, and in 1954 she and Beryl Davis, Connie Haines and Della Russell (later replaced by Rhonda Fleming) began recording religious-themed music and touring as The Four Girls.

Christian couple in the UK barred from being foster parents because of their views on Homosexuality

It’s a sad thing in this post-modern world where cultural relativism is the rule, Christians are made to feel like they’re the outcasts.

The Daily Mail reports that a Christian couple morally opposed to homosexuality today lost a High Court battle over the right to become foster carers.

Eunice and Owen Johns, aged 62 and 65, from Oakwood, Derby, went to court after a social worker expressed concerns when they said they could not tell a child a 'homosexual lifestyle' was acceptable.

The Pentecostal Christian couple had applied to Derby City Council to be respite carers but withdrew their application believing it was 'doomed to failure' because of the social worker's attitude to their religious beliefs.

The couple deny that they are homophobic and said they would love any child they were given. However, what they were 'not willing to do was to tell a small child that the practice of homosexuality was a good thing'.

Today they asked judges to rule that their faith should not be a bar to them becoming carers, and the law should protect their Christian values.
But Lord Justice Munby and Mr Justice Beatson ruled that laws protecting people from discrimination because of their sexual orientation 'should take precedence' over the right not to be discriminated against on religious grounds.

The landmark case heard that the couple, who are now considering an appeal, argued their rights are being 'trumped' by those of homosexuals under equality legislation.


Outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London Mrs Johns stood alongside her husband as she said: 'We are extremely distressed at what the judges have ruled today.

'All we wanted was to offer a loving home to a child in need. We have a good track record as foster parents.

'But because we are Christians, with mainstream Christian views on sexual ethics, we are apparently unsuitable as foster parents.


'We are unsure how we can continue the application process following the court's ruling today.
'We have been excluded because we have moral opinions based on our faith and we feel sidelined because we are Christians with normal, mainstream, Christian views on sexual ethics.

'The judges have suggested that our views might harm children.

'We have been told by the Equality and Human Rights Commission that our moral views may "infect" a child

'We do not believe that this is so. We are prepared to love and accept any child. All we were not willing to do was to tell a small child that the practice of homosexuality was a good thing.

Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance, is the refrain Liberals love to throw around. However, as often is the case, it rings hollow because what they’re really saying, “…agree with us or else!” There’s nothing tolerant about that whatsoever.

What we do here on earth is one thing. And it might be in vogue to act as if homosexuality is moral life style. But, for those of us who believe in a higher authority, we beg to differ and stand on that truth.

Jack Nicholson a Likable Bad Guy in “How Do You Know”

In Columbia Pictures' romantic comedy “How Do You Know,” Jack Nicholson has to make a largely unsympathetic character vulnerable, human - even likable.

The multiple Oscar-winner plays Charles, a business tycoon, who has worked all of his life for only two things: the success of his company and his son’s well-being. Paul Rudd plays his son, George, who's been wrongly indicted for stock fraud on the day he met the girl who could possibly be “the one.”




“How Do You Know” reunites Nicholson with director James L. Brooks whose films “Terms of Endearment” and “As Good As It Gets” have given the former Oscar acting trophies.

“Because of their long association, Jim and Jack wanted to make certain that the role would allow Jack to show colors he hasn’t shown before,” explains producer Laurence Mark. Amazingly enough, Nicholson has never played the father of an adult man. “So, Jack’s involvement actually affected the role in a positive way, making it even more dimensional.”

“Early in the movie, Jack’s character tells his son that if he’s forced to choose between his son and the company, even though it may kill him, he may pick the company,” says Brooks. But this is also a man who raised his son alone after his wife left them both. Would he really sell out his kid that way? “I wrote that line, I wrote the character, and I still can’t decide if that’s his core truth. The final mystery to him and everybody else is whether he’s a good guy or a bad guy. As William Hurt told me a long time ago, sometimes the job is to hold the question and not to provide the answer.”

“He loves his son, but he loves himself as well, and he understands what no one else does: he is facing the possible destruction of one of the two people he loves most in the world,” explains producer Paula Weinstein. “He’s at a moment when he wants to duck for cover, but that leaves his son exposed to take the hit. It was fascinating to watch how their camaraderie and affection comes out of all that emotional confusion.”

“Because I’ve worked with Jack, it was natural to turn to him,” says Brooks. “I’m always slack-jawed at his acting, but he has moments in this movie that are as elegant as anything I’ve ever seen him do.”

“I couldn’t imagine anybody but Jack Nicholson in the role of Charles,” says Rudd. “Working with him has been one of the biggest professional thrills of my life. He has a persona that’s larger than life and he’s been the biggest name in movies for four decades, but what was amazing to me was how good an actor he is. He makes it look so easy, but he’s present every single moment he’s in front of the camera.”



Nicholson is one of the most honored actors of all time, has worked with many of the film industry’s most esteemed directors during his career, which has spanned five decades and encompassed more than 60 feature films. He most recently starred in Warner Bros. hit comedy “The Bucket List” with Morgan Freeman and the Academy Award®-winning drama “The Departed” for director Martin Scorsese.

Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal, Reunited in "Machete"

Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal reunite and reignite their tandem on Philippine primetime as the Koreana star makes a special appearance on GMA-7's Machete beginning this week.

Kris is set to play Jessa, a damsel in distress who rescues a severely injured Dakila/Machete (Aljur Abrenica) after engaging in an epic battle with Karum (Ryan Eigenmann). As Jessa nurses Machete's wounds, the ancient warrior will protect Jessa from her overbearing father who wanted to marry her off to man she doesn't love.

Sparks will certainly fly anew as the former love team shares the small screen almost a year after their last project together, the fanstaserye The Last Prince. Before which, they also starred in Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin and All My Life, where the two made headlines with their crowd-pleasing portrayals and strong onscreen chemistry.

“Twilight's” Catherine Hardwicke Directs “Red Riding Hood”

Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the original “Twilight” film now tackles “Red Riding Hood,” bringing to the screen a cautionary tale of danger and deception.

Hardwicke notes it’s the fairytale’s more sinister roots that lend themselves perfectly to a fantasy thriller. “Most of us grew up with a sanitized version of Red Riding Hood, but the original fairy tale has darker elements that make it much more intriguing. The idea of a girl going into the woods by herself and having a wolf stalking her and then speaking to her… That holds so much mystery and captures your imagination on so many levels. When you were a child, the story might have meant one thing to you, but looking back on it as a teenager or adult, you respond to it in a completely different way.”




In the film, Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is caught between two handsome suitors: Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), her heart’s desire since childhood, and Henry (Max Irons), the man her parents have chosen for her to marry. Unwilling to be parted, Valerie and Peter were planning to run away together, but, in a horrifying instant, the wolf changes everything.

The implicit message of the Red Riding Hood fable is: don’t talk to strangers. But what if the wolf turns out to be someone you know…someone you trust…someone you love? Producer Jennifer Davisson Killoran observes, “The story plays into our fears that someone close is not really who they appear to be. To me, the big, bad wolf represents the anxiety of not knowing who you’re really dealing with.”

Putting a twist on the classic tale, the predator in the film is a werewolf, giving it the guise of a human until a full moon illuminates its true nature. Building on that premise, screenwriter David Leslie Johnson crafted a murder mystery in which everyone is a possible suspect and the resulting terror and paranoia permeates an entire community.

Killoran confirms, “Virtually every single character has that moment where you lose faith in them. We very consciously designed it so that anyone could be the wolf.”

“I think David did a beautiful job,” states Hardwicke. “He dove into the genesis of the legend to get at the essence of it. And then he added his own fertile imagination to the mix and really enriched the story.”

Johnson says, “I did a lot of research into how the fable had changed as it was passed down, depending on the time and place. Long before it was tied up in a nice little bow and presented as a fairy tale, it contained some graphic and rather disturbing details and the ending wasn’t quite so pat. I liked the idea of expanding on the story’s origins to generate more danger, suspense and adventure.”

The combination of young love, suspense and ancient legend immediately appealed to Hardwicke, who recalls, “As I read the script, I got very excited because it took place in a fantasy world but had a dark side. It was a thriller with unexpected turns as well as a compelling love story, which also held some surprises for me. I was really pulled in as the stakes kept getting higher, and more and more secrets and lies were unraveled.”




For the producers, the choice of Catherine Hardwicke to direct “Red Riding Hood” was an easy one. Killoran attests, “Catherine has demonstrated an ability to tap into the soul of younger audiences in a way that few others can. It’s evident in all her films; they are never condescending or stereotypical. There is something very honest in the way she conveys how teenagers communicate, how they think and how they look at the world.”

Seyfried agrees. “You want a director who brings that much enthusiasm and excitement to the table. She just loves making movies and has so much imagination. When we were in pre-production, she showed me drawings and photos and videos she had put together, which really helped me understand the different facets of my character. She truly is the most creative director I’ve ever worked with.”

ABS-CBN To Communication Students: Listen To Your Audience

Kapamilya executives led by ABS-CBN Chairman-CEO Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III reminded over 700 communication students nationwide at the Pinoy Media Congress Year 6 held at the University of Santo Tomas last February 22 to 23 one constant and important insight on the industry: no matter what form of media you’re using, your audiences always come first.

Lopez, along with ABS-CBN’s division heads and other esteemed speakers, delivered industry tips, issue analysis, eye-opening presentations and inspiration to the delegates of the two-day event, organized yearly by the network and the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE).

ABS-CBN Channel 2 Head Cory Vidanes told the students and professors that ABS-CBN always keeps in mind the needs and wants of the viewers. In fact, every program addresses a specific need, she said.

“Our noontime program provides lively and uplifting fun. Our reality programs deliver the thrill and excitement. Our talk shows and news programs keep people in the loop. Our variety shows showcase Filipino talent. Our teleseryes tell you your stories, stories of empowered individuals who overcome trials while game shows demonstrate that skill matched with strategy and luck can change people’s lives,” she explained.

ABS-CBN Creative Communications Management Head Robert Labayen, meanwhile, reminded the students to be sensitive about the feelings and sensibilities of the viewing public. “Inspire people to be their best. Don’t preach, instead touch their hearts,” he said.

Labayen then played the popular “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko” station ID and the “Bagong Simula” music video to show how communicators can take the role of a nation’s “cheering squad” in times of distress and turmoil.

ABS-CBN Customer Business Development Head Vivian Tin also disproved the notion that media has power over the masses. She advised the students not to underestimate the public. She said, based on research, the “masa” is actually very perceptive and is able to process what is given to them by media.

She concluded by saying, “We live and die based on the choices of the viewers.”

With a theme of “Engaging People and Media Participation for Change,” there were also many presentations on the power of social media and convergence in the event. In ABS-CBN, technology like the Internet and cellphones play key roles in projects such as “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” and the “No to Mining in Palawan” signature campaign, and for programs such as “Imortal,” which offers its viewers an experience beyond TV by producing webisodes.

Still, amid all the opportunities made possible by new media, the leaders of ABS-CBN told the students that their most powerful instrument is oneself. Hence, it is important that they continue learning, to not forget to listen to their audience, and to uphold integrity at work.

The delegates, all communication majors, were also treated with surprise appearances by Kapamilya artists Coco Martin, Maja Salvador, Andi Eigenmann of the teleserye “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin” and “Happy Yipee Yehey” hosts John Estrada, Randy Santiago, Bianca Manalo, and Toni Gonzaga. Their learning experience also didn’t end inside the College of Medicine auditorium of the University of Santo Tomas as ABS-CBN also gave them a free tour of the La Mesa Eco Park and free viewing of the movie “RPG: Metanoia” at the ABS-CBN Dolphy Theater.

Phil Younghusband and James Younghusband - Newest Collezione-C2 Brand Ambassadors

Football hotties Phil Younghusband and James Younghusband are now the newest endorsers of Filipino fashion brand Collezione-C2, the makers of the now iconic My Pilipinas shirt with the familiar Philippine map design. The English-Filipino members of the Philippine National Football team popularly known as Azkals were chosen by the brand to embody the talented Pinoy.

“Celebrating the uniqueness of the resilient Filipino and the gifts and skills he has to offer the country and the rest of the world is something that we are very passionate about," Collezione-C2 Managing Director Joey Qua sais. "We wholeheartedly welcome James and Phil to the team as we strive to continually express our shared vision for the talented Pinoy.”

According to James, there were no second thoughts about endorsing the brand. "We have something in common - a love for originality, creativity, Pinoy pride, and living out one’s passion.” Phil added, "We also believe in Filipino artistry and the art of forward-thinking. These are things we both believe are relevant in this day and age for our country to stand out and make its mark in different areas of expertise.”




Born in England to an English father and a Filipina mother, the Younghusband brothers got an early start in their football career when they were both selected to be play for the Chelsea Football Club. In 2008, they decided to move to the Philippines permanently, and were eventually recruited to play for the Azkals. “It’s a real honor and privilege to represent the country for a sport that has not gained as much recognition as it should and of course, it makes us happy that so many Filipinos are now learning to appreciate football," James said.

Fueled by their passion for the sport, the Younghusband brothers recently founded a football academy for the youth called The Younghusband Football Academy in 2010. "We started with six-month training programs for kids who wanted to learn the sport, but we eventually realized that we would need to do more than this to help instigate a deeper appreciation for football," Phil said. "So this year, we decided to go across the country with a grassroots program for public school teachers in the province to help us promote the sport more strategically, and so that we can ensure that the cycle of helping young people live out their passion for it is continuous and ongoing. We’ll also be offering a summer clinic in Taguig soon.”

Phil and James encourage all Pinoys to find something they're passionate about. “Discover what you’re passionate about because it will set the direction for the rest of your life," James said. "Don’t hold back or be afraid to try new things - after all, you won’t know how you feel about something unless you give it a try.” Phil added, “Finding your passion is not something that will happen overnight. You have to persevere, keep trying, and never give up. Practice patience, because at the end of the day, when you discover what gets you going, it’s all going to be worth it. Your passion will motivate you, transform you, and when used properly, even make a difference in others’ lives.”

Ted Kennedy 'rented out a Chilean brothel for the entire night, FBI files says

Once again true journalism occurs overseas.

Ted Kennedy, one of the worst drunkards in the history of the U.S. who literally got away with murder at Chappaquiddick and benefited from the same state run media that continues to white wash the incompetent that sits in the White House, has another peccadillo that has come to light.

The Daily Mail reports that the late U.S. senator Ted Kennedy has been accused of renting an entire Chilean brothel and seeking meetings with communists who had left-wing views.

The information came to light after a Freedom of Information request by Judicial Watch - the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption - who put pressure on the FBI to release the material.

Their file on the late senator, who died from brain cancer in August 2009, was released but contained a large amount of blacked out information - until now.

The statements previously withheld include accusations that during a tour of several Latin American countries he 'made arrangements to "rent" a brothel for an entire night, allegedly inviting one of the Embassy's chauffeurs to participate in the night's activities'.

In each country he visited he was also said to have 'insisted on interviewing "the angry young men" of the country as well as Communists who had extreme left-wing views'.

When he was in Mexico, it is said that his request to have certain left-wingers - one of whom was later linked with a Soviet spy ring - was refused as he was warned not to associate himself with such people.

The 83rd Academy Awards were held in LA last night. No big surprises re the winners – Natalie Portman won for Black Swan and The King’s Speech won 4 including the biggies Best Actor and Best Director.

Most of the actresses kept it safe in shades of red, silver and of course black. Having a celebrity wear your dress to an event as huge as the Oscars can do wonders for a designer’s career. State-run media greatly exaggerating turnout for 50-state Union Protest, falls way short of expectations

Don’t fall for the glowing reports of a massive turnout of union protestors all over the country by the main stream Obama boot licking media. Unions workers represent less than 6% of the population. They are hugely outnumbered by the majority of the taxpaying public that pays their salaries.

It’s not even close!

But, the media will paint a far different picture because it’s their president they’re propping up.

The president, unions, and the media is the new Axis of Evil as far as the American peoples pocketbook is concerned.

Legal-insurrection reports that protests in support of Wisconsin public sector unions were organized by MoveOn.org and labor unions today.Promoters, such as David Dayen at Firedoglake, were predicting a million-person turnout nationwide.

But reports as of 7:00 E.S.T. today make clear that other than in Madison, Wisconsin, the crowds were sparse.The turnout in Madison was sizable, with estimates ranging over from 50-70,000, which included protesters bused in from other states. (Dayen is trying to pump the crowd estimate to over 100,000.)

But elsewhere, the crowds numbered only in the hundreds or low thousands.In Washington, D.C., only about 500 people showed up (go to link for good photos of crazy signs). (Note, WaPo says 1000.)In Columbus, OH, where you would expect a big crowd given a similar controversy, only "several thousand" people protested. Other head counts, based on news reports, include: Boston (1000), Portsmouth, N.H. (few hundred), Augusta, ME (small crowd), New York City ("several thousand"), Chicago (1000), Miami (100), Austin (several hundred), Chicago (1000); Lansing, MI (2000), Nashville (hundreds), Los Angeles (2000), Richmond, VA (300), Denver (1000); Frankfurt, KY (several hundred), Jefferson City, MO (several hundred), Harrisburg, PA (several hundred). While I don't have a complete count, based on these numbers from some major cities and labor states, total protesters nationwide (excluding Madison) likely totaled under 100,000 combined.

The 50-state protest was a failure, plain and simple, although the images from Madison may create the false impression of massive nationwide protests.

AFL-CIO chief and bed partner Richard Trumka blesses Obama's handling of Wisconsin labor battle

Wow, is this really news considering Trumka and Obama practically share the same underwear? Here’s Trunk admitting he visits the White House two to three times a week, more than Obama’s own cabinet secretaries.



Truaka is part of Obama’s shadow cabinet. That’s what happens when the AFL-CIO raises millions for Obama’s run for president and Obama returns the favor by giving the union millions of dollars back in Stimulus money. The president is a shill for the unions and the rest of the taxpaying public pays for this mutual masturbation sessions.

It’s time to smell the coffee, folks!

That’s unless of course if the union doesn’t go on strike delivering it to your local store or diner.

The Hill reports that AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka gave his blessing Sunday to President Obama's handling of the labor standoff in Wisconsin. Amid some criticism on the left that Obama could do more to boost unions in their demonstrations against Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and his proposal to eliminate most collective bargaining rights for public workers, Trumka said the president was doing just fine. "I think he's doing it the right way," Trumka said on NBC's "Meet the Press." A growing number of Democrats have pressed Obama to take more of a leading role in the labor dispute. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), a co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, last week called for Obama to head to Wisconsin.
